Gala evening was really an event to remember. The decor was stunning. Thank you so much. If I'm looking back at my expectations everything came true and a little bit more. This was a learning opportunity well worth the money granted by the Carnegie Corporation, well worth the loss of sleep. For me this Academy was just in time.
It is also a self learn course. How far can I be stretched, time management, emotional intelligence, thinking differently, scary how some of the personal evaluations are true, appreciation of friendships that was built? Now the hard work is starting

Mobile Technology
Even though I have attended this session previously it was a wonderful refresher course. I said I was at the best library
Diversity
Diversity isn't a problem for me. I can't take a lack of good manners and respect for each other. I shared a room with somebody of another culture group and we got along very well. I think it is all about behaviour and understanding of each other’s perceptions of life. Luckily we are both morning persons. Thank you, Eunice for sharing the room with me.
Our small group are very diverse: 2 men + 3 women; in these group 2 persons from the public library and 3 from the academic library; and also representative out of each population group. Yes, Ujala I remember what you said when looking at diversity, I want to illustrate that people with different backgrounds like our group can work wonderful together. It is all about emotional maturity. According to my subjective view we are the best group

Dynamic organization by Johan Greeff
I wish we could have this session a little bit earlier in the programme. We can use this knowledge we encounter today very fruitful in the Wiki assignment. Contrisipate: new word learned (it now exit) which stand for: contribute appreciate and participation. We learned a lot today that will help me with the alignment of our faculty library's alignment with the library and the faculty's strategies and our new vision, mission and values. This was for the really the highlight of all the session till now.
The Week-end Glorious Week-end
I have 24 hours people around me. I'm not use to it and the week-end is for me thus a breathing moment that I contemplate and I think better when I'm alone. We could go away for the day but had to be back around supper time. I've got a wonderful idea while washing clothes back at home and want to run it by the rest of my group. Sunday morning 3 am I got another great idea in connection with the first idea. The podcast combined with an electronic poster. A podcast I've never done and hope David know how. The poster I remember because Adrienne showed me hers.
12 Nov continue
Today's lecture about KM was for me difficult because it was not that new to me and I had to listen to an accent not so easy on my ear. To stay awake was a real problem. I manage this session by looking at the other Academy participants. They found it definitely very interesting. Marieta thought it was wonderful. I just realised that I was really at one of the best University Libraries in the country. It is a very good feeling to have.
Johannes Cronje's session even in a grave yard session was received with a lot of enthusiasm. I realized that I can think a lot inside the box. The big thing is to think outside the box. If a person is not careful, you can develop tunnel vision about a subject. I learned a lot out of this session and I must keep this thought always fresh at the back of my head when I go back.

Food and Accommodation at Leriba Lodge 12 Nov
Beware of the food and accommodation at Leriba Lodge. They are spoiling us with wonderful food. They torture me to make choices, because if I don't I will be rolling out of here. And the dessert! Their staff is very friendly and I know some of them already by name. The rooms and beds are very welcoming after a hard day’s work. The surroundings also help’s to relax
Our Grand Tour 11 November 2010
I was today a tourist in my own library, the Merensky Library at UP. I must say it was really interesting to see and hear through my fellow Academy members. It also made me very proud to know I'm part of this institution. We are strategically in a very good position.
It was my second time to the National Library and the place is still fascinating to me.
The tour gave me the impression of how important this specific library is.

Day 4 Maximising human capital
The first thing I realised was that there are a lot of laws that I have to be aware of, to mention a few:
the Labour relations act,
Basic conditions of employment act
Contract of employment
and the common law
Then there are also the employment equity, occupational health & safety.
Human capital is all about VALUE of the people because they are future returns and through developing them you are investing in them. I don't work at UPLS (University of Pretoria Library Services) for the money there are much more that I get out of it like challenging and very interesting work, lots of opportunities, recognition etc.
A person has a certain capital that is part of the /her package and you can damage the company if you don't know the value of that person. People are part of the assets of the company. Your company must be the employer’s choice. If people are happy in a company you are optimizing their performances, your company's value and you will be able to have enough people to choice from for the successor plan.
Using a performance management plan and use it actively and understanding it help to achieving the strategies and objectives set by the company and also personal goals.
When handling conflict it is important to determine how far the confrontation developed it will help you to act upon it either compromising or collaborating.

Day 4 Organisational leadership
What is leadership?
It is changing the attitudes and actions of people who are related to specific goals. You as leader must also have yourself a positive attitude. If you want your followers to be leaders you must set the example and part of you characteristics there must be the ability to create a vision that is surround by your positive energy. People must be able to trust you, what you do are in their best interest and that you really care for them and the organization. You must develop the team members, together you can work on their pdp (personal develop plan). Invest in the team but also into yourself. A leader must also be emotional secure and that is where emotional intelligence comes in. I'm also experience in this leadership course that there must be a social balance and look after your health.
A leader must also give attention to expectations from the staff and they must know your expectations from them and works according a set of values keeping in mind the cultural differences, work coordination and group dynamics. You must lead them not break them and it will depend on your leadership style.

Day 3 Formal presentations + Fun
The overview by John Tsebe on the libraries position in the country let me realised that we as profession can have an influence on the actions the government take. We are part of this country and we can make a difference if we take action. Naomi Haasbroek placed LIASA in perspective and if I connect it to the above said, every librarian are actually under obligation to be part of your own professions association, that is if you want to build and be part of Librarianship. The next speaker Rene Schoombee is a good example of that. She thinks out of the box and does something with situations that looks hopeless.
The FUN PART:
The Pomoja game: While you play you learn. The significance to me was my own reactions to function under pressure and to think on my feed. There is also interesting how it connect to the HBD profile

Day 2 Hermann Brain Dominance & Campbell Leadership Descriptor's tool
This session was fun. The results of the HBD were a surprise and I can live with it. It will help to understand other people's behaviour better. I start to feel like a psychologist who is trying to place a person in certain category.
The 2nd part of the Campbell Leadership Descriptor's Tool will help with my own development and growth in the parts where development is needed. That is more or less everywhere. The tool let me think about myself, my abilities, my strengths, and my developmental areas.

My Expectations of the Leadership Academy
I have the expectations that my knowledge of leadership in the library field will be expanded. I'm going to network with people of different sectors in the library arena and learn about new trends in the library environment. When looking at the programme and what we had to do beforehand I'm also going to learn more about myself.
The new knowledge that I will obtain can be ploughed back into my institution, and also sharing it with other people who are not part of the University of Pretoria, Dept. Library Services. This is the beginning of a new career with a different outlook at matters that are part of my job. The new and "old" trends can be implemented or jazzed up to enhance and market our services. As a leader I want to inspire and influence the people I get in contact with.
Today was the first day and I sure my views will change as the academy proceeds.
Issues that will be addressed are:
Enhancing our faculty library's marketing strategy at the departments.
Encourage colleagues to explore more WEB2 tools in training and marketing
Encourage the use or buying of e-material were possible and explore new formats.
Establish a network with current academy delegates.
Create opportunities for my staff to enhance their careers and the future of our profession.
The presentations of the WEB2 tools were not totally new to me but I learned new things of the blog applications and layout which I can use to enhance my blog. Wiki's we are going to use extensively in the days to come.
The Campbell Leadership Descriptor Tool Part 1 was an honesty self test for me. Here is also an interesting article about this tool
